Entrepreneurship in Egypt

It is impossible to assess the impact of recent governmental changes in Egypt on entrepreneurship, but it is easy to guess that they wont be good. Tourism is being especially hard hit.

Cairo is highly condensed city with more than 8 million population. Since 98% of the private sector are very small companies, the government is trying to encourage small business activity. But, in reality, the initial funding source is scarce and the regulation and tax is too high for entrepreneur. This fact encourages a lot of company not to register to the government. I believe the potential high growth would come from the communication sector – Wireless cellphone (380K users), Internet service provider (600K users).

  • 15% of 85 million total populations are working in Cairo (Very condensed city)
  • President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power on 11 February, 2011. He had been the 4th president since the 1952 revolution.
  • US$1 = 6.03802 EGP (1 EGP = US$0.17)
  • 10 EGP for McDonald Meals | 30 EGP for a BigMac Meal
  • 85% Muslim and 99% speak Arabic with most of the educated population speaking English or French as a second language
  • High corruption
  • Everything can be negotiable from taxicab to grocery shopping and even a big business (taxi’s now have meters)
  • Total male ruling society
